Food and Home Delivery

Introduction

Embodied carbon in today’s food accounts for a third of our annual carbon emissions in the UK. We at BohoGreen encourage the use of local suppliers and seasonal produce. You only need to walk past a supermarket to see how much space of a site is given over to parking. If everyone stopped driving to the supermarket it would make a significant reduction in our annual carbon emissions.

ZEDStandards employed for this development include:

Seasonal eating

By eating seasonally and locally you are lowering your carbon footprint as much of the out of season food is flown across the globe from where ever it is in season. Locally grown seasonal food is cheaper as it all comes at once; simple economics dictates that an abundance of anything is going to lower the price.

Farmers Markets

Local farmers markets can be a great day out as well as supporting local producers and economy you can reduce the carbon footprint of your food as farmers markets have set limits of 30-50 miles that a producer can be from field to market.

Ordering from the supermarket

Ordering from the supermarket may not be the best option but it is a start particularly if you choose wisely on the produce you select. If you buy English strawberries in May and have them delivered by a multidrop driver you can save many separate cars on the road and be reasonably happy that the produce has not been flown across the planet. If you choose strawberries in December you will still reduce the number of vehicles needed but the berries will have come from South Africa by airfreight which is a little self defeating.

ZEF links

ZEDfactory will help set up local farm deliveries, ideally using zero emission vehicles, from farm to ZED development. Our first ZEF is the Common work farm at Bore Place in Kent. Tractors run on rape seed oil, a biogas CHP is run on methane from cow manure and zero emission vehicles deliver produce from farm to urban ZED. We hope to find more farmers who wish to go green so that we can set up a nationwide net work of ZEF links.

Office hours

Collection points can be provided in developments for produce to be safely stored for convenient collection. It is propose that links with local food producers will be promoted and economies of scale developed. Home port systems can be used base of each of the buildings which provide cool secure storage until you come home.
